River Finn

Ballybofey, Co Donegal/Tyrone

The Finn and it’s tributary the Reelin are probably the most prolific salmon and grilse rivers in Donegal/ the Foyle catchment. From the confluence of the Reelin and Finn just above the Ivy Bridge, there is excellent spate fly fishing water. The river then widens out and slows down with notable exceptions at places like Killygordon and Liscooley. It then further widens and generally slows from Castlefinn down to the junction with the Mourne just above Lifford Bridge. The Finn is known as a spring salmon river and it undoubtedly does get a fair run of these most prized fish. The river opens on the 1st March and there are usually fish taken from this day onwards with the generally agreed peak time around the middle of April fish were taken right up to the Ivy Bridge some twenty miles above the tide at Lifford Bridge. . The grilse arrive in late June and July is the best month. There can be a run of fish from late August but the river closes on the 15th September. To fish, you require a Loughs Agency Rod License and a permit from one of the owners or angling clubs that control the fishing.

Season: 1st March to 15th September

Permit Required: There are a number of private owners, angling clubs and organisations that issue permits for their own stretches of water.

Best Times: Spring salmon: 1st March – 31st May; Grilse and summer salmon: 1st June – 20th July
