River Boyne and Tributaries

Navan

Water levels are good for trout fishing in the River Boyne but rain is needed to take salmon upstream. Colm Lynch from East Coast Angling reports that brown trout fishing has been very good on the River Boyne at Navan this week. According to Colm there have been a lot of trout anglers venturing out due to the improvement in the fishing. Most of the Navan waters have been fishing very well but the Ramparts fishery has produced some excellent fishing. Small size 16 flies and nymphs are producing the best results. The best of the fishing is in the early evening. Mark Harris and Neil Duggan from Navan had a number of trout between 1.25lbs and 1.75lbs during the week. Colm Lynch had four nice trout on Thursday 26th August and local angler Brian Lenehan also had good trout fishing on a number of evenings during the last week. Nymphs have been producing nice trout from the faster runs.

Additional information and permits for the Navan waters can be obtained from Colm Lynch, East Coast Angling, Balmoral Industrial Estate, Kells Road Navan, Co. Meath. Tel: 046 9073377   mobile: 087 2044996  email: eastcoastangling@gmail.com

Athlone Anglers Association news update

DAVID WINS SOCIAL COMMITTEE CUP: You always know the end of the season is upon us when the competition for the Social Committee Cup takes place and as it took place last Sunday that must mean the end of the season is upon us. As always the competition attracted a great entry with twenty nine boats taking part and with all methods being used, from trolling to wet flies to dry flies to dapping, hopes were high for a good return and while fish were caught they were mostly small apart from the one caught by David Cunniffe which was to earn him his first ever competition win.

The presentation of prizes and final weigh in took place that evening in the Coosan Cottage where Tommy O’Neill was an excellent host. When the scales came down at eight thirty the clear winner was David Cunniffe with his fantastic trout. In second place were Jack, Alan and Paddy McEvilly whose fish weighed in just less than two pounds lighter and which was released back into the lake after weighing. This was Jacks first time out this year and after the days fishing they had we think he will be brought every week from now on. Ray and Conor Dowling took third prize for their trout which weighed in just six ounce lighter while Conor Hannon took fourth place for his trout which was almost a further pound lighter and this fish was also released. Sean Kelly took the fifth and final prize for his fish which weighed in at just eight ounces lighter.

Our thanks to Tommy O’Neill of the Coosan Cottage for the excellent hospitality and for the very generous sponsorship of this competition. Thanks also go to the Captains of The Day who were Richie Fallon and Eamon Cunningham.

THE CONWAY/CONROY CUP: The competition for the Wykes/Gaffey Memorial Cup will take place next Sunday 5th September. The start will be from Gallagher’s at 10.30am and will finish with lines up at 6.00pm. The Captains of The Day will be Eoin O’Neill and Liam O’Sullivan and catch and release will be facilitated.

LOUGH ENNELL, CO WESTMEATH

Last Sunday we fished the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup in tough conditions. Very bright conditions and squally winds made it hard to entice the Ennell trout. Mind you I had my chances as on my first two drifts I rose three fish and failed to make contact. This was just before the sun burst through the clouds. The competition was well supported with anglers from all across Leinster competing. On the day just two anglers managed to land trout and Seamus Eighan was top rod, with John Grimes taking 2nd spot. The presentation took place in Whitebridge Bay at 7pm, and Con Hope one of the great Ennell angling legends was on hand to present the Cup which he kindly sponsored some years back. Con was joined by his daugher Lorraine, and his Grand-daughter Eadaoin Quinn. John Tyrrell competition captain of L.E.T.P.A. thanked Con for his sponsorship, and also all the anglers who supported the competition on the day. It’s a busy month for the club and on September 19th the O’Malley Cup will be fished, with the Christy Sleator Perpetual Cup on September 26th. More on these trout competitions in the coming weeks.

LOUGH ACALLA, CO GALWAY

There was plenty of angling activity on Lough Acalla following a recent stocking. There was improved fly hatches due to the warmer daytime conditions. The best reported fish of the week was a 3.5lb Brown Trout which was caught on a Pheasant tail. A 3lb Rainbow was caught on a Black Pennell. The most successful flies were Green and Golden Olive, Green Peter, Peter Ross, Pheasant tail, Black Pennell, Muddler and Mourrough sedge. Prospects look promising for the coming week.

BLEACH LOUGH ANGLERS, CO LIMERICK

Bleach Lough Anglers are to host the All Ireland Rainbow Trout Challenge on the fishery at Pallaskenry, Co Limerick on October 23rd, 24th and 25th. Great prizes including a Sheelin Boat are up for grabs.

Western Lakes

Liam Gavin reports from Cushlough on fishing on Loughs Mask and Carra:
Ronan Cusack & Kieran Biggins fished in the bright sunshine of Sunday on Lough Mask and caught 9 good trout, all weighing between 1lb and 1.5lbs. The shallows are finally fishing well on Mask, Richard Cameron & Tom Mulvey took 3 fish along the Rocky Shore which hasn't produced good fishing all year until now. Dapping along the north part of the lake also proved successful with natural daddies and sedges the main attractors. Many large fish were observed along the Canal and Dog Holes during the weekend with seemingly little interest in feeding. Kilmaine man Kevin Sheridan had some nice fishing on Monday evening on Mask, it seems Mask is coming into its own a lot more. Effort is much higher than at times during the year, and anglers are getting a good return on the effort.

Lough Carra had some good angling returns during the less than ideal conditions of the weekend. Thomas Aldridge from the UK landed 4 trout over the size limit around the Twin Islands, he also put back 4 fish just undersize. Evening fishing is still exciting some of the brave anglers prepared to cope with the dark, Harry Malone from Tipperary reported 7 trout with his boat partner on Friday, the biggest weighing in just under 4lbs.

Lough Corrib

The International Varsities Championships were held out of Cong over the weekend. The competition was fished on a catch measure and release basis. 20 teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, France, Germany and five from the United States competed in the competition. Ireland's Galway Mayo Institute of Technology team took first place, while the host, Limerick Institute of Technology placed second. The University of Montana's "varsity" fly-fishing team placed third.

I also received a report of a fine trout caught by John Cosgrove from boatman Declan Gibbons, a fish of 54cms which probably weighed over 4lbs.

Cong River

Alan Crinnion, originally from Cork but now living in Mayo, let me know of a great fish landed by his brother Ken, who was visiting for the weekend. Alan took him to the Cong River to show him the fishing, but it was Ken who showed him how it’s done, landing a 16lbs ferox trout on the worm, the fish of a lifetime. I’m sure Ken will be back for another visit next year when the Cong River is open again. Anglers should be aware that the season is now finished on the Cong River and Canal since the 31st of August, a conservation measure put in place to protect the ferox trout that spawn there.

Lough Conn

Due to the bright sunny weather it was a rather quiet week on Lough Conn. As a consequence, only very few anglers ventured out. However, anglers who persisted were rewarded with some nice catches. Out of Pontoon Bridge, Chris Byrne, Roscommon had 2 trout to a wet Green Peter. Participating in the “Catch & Cook” class, Tom Templeton, Dublin and Ellie Campbell, Roscommon caught a total of 3 trout, best at 1.5 lbs.

Elsewhere, local angler Peter Roche, boated 4 trout best at 2 lbs, all caught on dry Daddy Longlegs along the Brackwansha Shore.

Ballin Lough

Seventeen rods fished the lake during the week landing a total of 16 rainbow trout (3 released). Amongst the best catches were: Mattie Foley and boat partner, Roscommon, who caught 6 fish, best at 3 lbs. Most successful flies included Muddler patterns and Minkies.

This prolific rainbow trout fishery remains open till the end of October. To book a boat on Ballin Lough, anglers should contact Mrs. Gill, beside the lake, on 098-26128.

Lough Melvin

The trout fishing for sonaghan was good overall with anglers recording some decent catches of good sonaghan. Certainly there were good numbers of sonaghan caught from Thursday to Sunday when the Garrison & Lough Melvin Anglers Association held their 31st 4 day Lough Melvin pairs Open Trout Competition. Attendance was very good with 350 anglers taking part over the three qualifying days on Thursday, Friday & Saturday. All competitors were provided with tea and sandwiches by the Maguire family every morning with a four course meal in local restaurants in the evening. This year there was a ban on the killing of Gillaroo and a 6 fish bag limit. The committee extended its thanks to the Rossinver Fishery who kindly allowed the competitors to fish their waters. Weather conditions over the four days varied from flat calm days with little wind to windy conditions with big waves. Bright sun prevailed on most days. Despite the varied and at times, difficult conditions, the Lough fished very well with some good bags of sonaghan recorded.
The competition was won by Stephen Ellis, Bangor and Brian Russel, Tandragee who both won a Burke’s 19ft boat plus some Galway Crystal. In second place came Brendan Shallow, Belleek and Denis Kellegher, Ballinrobe who received a cheque for £700 and some Galway Crystal. In third place were Mullingar anglers Brendan Murray and Colin Cahill who each won an electric outboard with battery, £100 and some Galway Crystal.

Cashel Trout Fishery

Buzzers and dries are still doing the business big time at Cashel.  Dungiven’s Mark Boyce released seven trout in a few hours while Derry Maurice Whiteman released sixteen trout one of which weighed 5lb.  Billy Hazlett also from Derry bagged two and released twelve which also took assorted dries.  Billy’s two trout for home weighed 4lb 2ozs and 2lb 12ozs.  Maghera’s Bernard Mellon released an amazing eighteen trout with his biggest one weighing 6lb.  Newcomer, Pearse Doherty (Maghera), released two which fell to dries too.  Derry’s Pat Nicell Snr, Pat Nicell Jnr and James Mc Feeley had a great day also bagging a total of six trout between them and releasing a further nine which fell to daddies, cdc’s and shipman’s buzzers.  Their total weights were 16lb 10ozs.  Billy Stevenson (England) accompanied by young Declan Stevenson (Feeny) bagged two weighing 4lb 7ozs and released four and two respectively using a self tied pink/white zonker-like fly.  John Ward and John Coyle (Derry) bagged one each averaging 2lb on their first visit to Cashel.  These anglers used a wee bibio and a red Montana.  Unfortunately their friend Peter Hardy lost the one he had on.
Well done to all!
