Only smaller pike taking mood
Marc O’Regan reports that here is very little pike angling activity taking place at the moment. Marc spent three days pike fishing in the Cavan area over the last week and had ten pike. Marc’s best fish weighed eight pounds.
Justin Bird and Eamonn Conway had two small jack pike trolling lures on Lough Muckno on Sunday. The bigger fish do not appear to be feeding at the moment. Conditions were rough on Muckno on Sunday with a strong cold breeze.

Jean-Pierre and son Nick along with Jose and Pierre are no strangers to Ireland as they come over two or three times a year. Nick, Jose and Pierre like the coarse fishing while Jean-Pierre takes a boat and goes Pike fishing. Kevin went out with Jean-Pierre Pike fishing each day but only small Pike to 9lbs were reported.

River Suck
Water levels are presently very low on the River Suck. French angling guide Patrick Boummon is back on the River Suck with four of his clients targeting the Pike. They had up to 25 pike daily, no large fish, best fish 8lbs. Three German anglers fished at Ballyforan for 2 days and caught 11 Pike ranging in weight from 2lbs to 24lbs.
River Shannon, Shannonbridge
30/08/10 River levels are at low summer level and the weather has been generally good. Many farmers have got their first hay crop from the Callow land beside the rivers for the first time in three years.
Frik Haoher, Switzerland fished the Shannon on 17th August using a lure to catch 10 pike. Best measured 70cm. Norman Shepherd London fished Shannonbridge on 18th August using a Toothy Critter to catch three pike. Two were 8lbs and the other 4lbs. Returned alive.
Guido Van Poll from Holland fished Shannon on 20th August in good weather, using a plug to catch a 90cm pike. Chris O Reilly Dublin fished the Shannon on 21st August using Copper and Silver poon to catch an 8lb pike. Good fight on a good day. Fish returned alive.
Jan Stevens Holland fished Shannon on 22nd August using dead bait on a fine day to catch 9 pike from 57cm to 71cm and 3 perch.
Aidan Kelly Shannonbridge fished the Shannon on 26th August on a fine day, catching 15 Roach. Aidan hooked a Roach on maggot and a pike snatched the Roach. Aidan fought the pike on his 4lbs line and after almost an hour he landed the 18lbs pike which he released alive.

Loughs Agency Pike Fishing Festival
The Loughs Agency will be holding its annual Pike Fishing Festival on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September 2010 in Baronscourt Estate, Co Tyrone.
The pike fishing competition will take place on the middle lake between 10am until 4pm. Entry fee is £10 for adults and £5 for juniors each day (all juniors to be accompanied by an adult). Saturday will be strictly shore fishing whilst on Sunday there is availability for 12 boats on the lake.
These events are suitable for adults and juniors making it an ideal day out for the family. There will be lots of top prizes and plenty of opportunity to learn the art of pike fishing.
Lionel Knobbs, Angling Development Manager with the Loughs Agency said 'this is a great weekend for both juniors and adults to develop their skills in pike angling. We had a lot of families taking part last year and quite a few mums and sons learning about the sport for the first time'.
Anyone interested in attending are advised to pre-register by emailing pikecompetition@loughs-agency.org before 5pm on 2nd September or for further information or to register please contact +44 (0) 2871 342100.
New Pike angling regulations for 2010
A 2010 regulation - that will be welcomed by most - is that which prohibits the killing of coarse fish (including eels).
As a summary (with effect from 1st January) -
Coarse fish. It is prohibited to kill coarse fish (however, see regulation on pike, below) in the Foyle and Carlingford areas waters.
Eels. It is prohibited to kill eels in the Foyle and Carlingford areas.
All such coarse fish and eels caught, must be carefully handled and returned alive and unharmed to the water.
Pike. There is a bag limit of 2 pike weighing 4 kg or less, on any one day. Pike of 4kg or more must be returned unharmed to the water. There is an exception for specimen pike with a bag limit of 1 specimen pike in any one day (a specimen pike in a river is 9 kg or more; a specimen pike in a lake is 13.6 kg or more).
Live bait. Live fish cannot be used as bait in fresh waters in the Foyle and Carlingford areas.
