Castleblaney- Polish Anglers Visit Lough Muckno

The ‘Fishmaniak’ Coarse Angling Club which is made up of members of the Polish angling community living in Ireland held their 2nd open coarse fishing competition at White Island on Lough Muckno on Sunday 29th August 2010. Fishing took place from 7.30am until 2pm and anglers travelled from many counties around the country to participate in this event on the shores of scenic Lough Muckno in Co. Monaghan.

Twenty nine anglers took part in the match in what was less than ideal fishing conditions.  Pole float and feeder tactics were all used by the competitors in an attempt to attain the biggest catch during the competition. There was a cold wind which made fishing very difficult but despite this anglers netted a total of 70kilos of roach, perch, hybrids and perch. The winner was of the event was Lucasz Goraus fishing the pole with a weight of 13kg 42g, second place went to Pawel Swisyun with a weight of 13kgs 02g and third place went to Krzysztof Spychalski with 6kg 92g. After being weighed all fish were returned alive to the lake. This important event which promotes catch and release was supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland.

At the prize giving after the event president of the club Pawel Ladniak thanked all of the part participants for supporting the competition and congratulated the anglers who had been placed in the event. Mr Ladniak also thanked David Byrne, Angling Marketing Coordinator and the other staff from Inland Fisheries Ireland who had assisted in running the event. He added “the competition is open to all anglers and we would welcome all anglers to next year’s event”.

Mr William Walsh Inland Fisheries Ireland Eastern River Basin Director said "IFI is delighted that all of the stakeholder groups in the angling and Castleblaney communities have supported this important event. The number of angling events taking place on Lough Muckno is growing each year and we are looking forward to working on further events like this with all local, rural and angling communities”.

The event was also supported by local community groups and angling clubs in Castleblaney and the surrounding area. Local anglers and the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI) calendar of events were consulted to ensure that there was no clash of dates at the venue. Pleasure and recreational anglers also supported this important competition on the day by fishing at other locations on the lake.

Royal Canal - Kildare

Excellent tench fishing was reported by an angler from the Royal canal in the Straffan area. This hard working angler recorded 14 tench after pre-baiting the stretch with sweetcorn and hemp. Well done to him.

Cork bream await the action!

bream
Photo: Kevin Gray enjoyed bite a cast sessions on Inniscarra

Cork’s bream are back and in bigger numbers than ever.  The angling festival scene gets underway this weekend with matchmen from England, Wales, Holland and Ireland, descending on the welcoming village of Coachford.

It is 15 years since the Inniscarra Reservoir hit the angling headlines with huge bream and rudd - until the fish suddenly vanished about six years ago.

But now they are back!   The problem is getting through the rafts of skimmer bream – an average size is 1lb – to find the bigger fish, along with rudd, roach, hybrids, plus the chance of an occasional carp or tench.

It’s 15 years since Kevin Gray first tackled the big Cork bream on the Inniscarra Lake system and he hasn’t missed a year since.  At this time of year he takes four weeks holiday (staying at O’Callaghan’s Bar) to ensure he covers all of the matches and gets plenty of pleasure fishing done.

Earlier this week we joined Kevin for two short feeder fishing sessions on the St John’s and the Pump House sections of Inniscarra and witnessed his bite-a-cast sessions.

But it isn’t all about match fishing.  This is a great spot for pleasure anglers on holiday who simply enjoy getting lots of bites and lively sport.

Please note that Active Irish Angling can provide inclusive angling holidays – even at short notice – to Coachford and the surrounding area using all ferry routes, including the Swansea-Cork overnight ferry service. Call now on 0151 324 4744.

STROKESTOWN LAKES AND RIVER SHANNON, CO LONGFORD AREA

bream
Photo: Jose and Nick from Belgium had catches to smile about.

Coarse angling has been good in the area with Bream being the predominant species featuring in the catches, also some good Tench, Hybrids, Roach, Rudd and big Perch. In recent days catch rates are down due to a change in the weather, warm bright days, cold evenings and early mornings.

Jean-Pierre and son Nick along with Jose and Pierre are no strangers to Ireland as they come to Melview Lodge two or three times a year. Swims were pre-baited and the catches got better each day. Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Perch were the main species with a nice big Tench on the last day for Pierre.

Carrick on Shannon Festival

Carrick on Shannon Festival
Photo: The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival celebrates its 30th birthday in September and the four-day event is attracting a new batch of overseas match fishermen who hope to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize.

But money isn’t everything.  The appeal for the new anglers seems to be the fact there is no pressure to pay anything more than the €80 entry fee and the majority of anglers don’t even bother with the optional sweepstake.
And on top of that, local fishing tackle dealer Terry Mann of Shannon Tackle Jamestown, throws €500 into the prize fund for the biggest fish caught on the last day!

“It works well”, explained the Terry, who moved from London 23 years ago to live and work on the banks of the River Shannon.  “The main festival is decided on points and introducing a decent-size last day prize keeps everyone focused on the Friday match”

Not only that, but there are valuable daily tackle prizes for the biggest fish and reduced bait prices to encourage more people to take part.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24 and the person to contact for more information is Charlotte Fearon on 00353 71 9620313.

It has to be said that there is a guaranteed €5,000 prize fund and across its 30 year history, more money has been paid out than ever is received in entry fees.
