Trout Angling Update

Loughs Agency area

Lionel Knobbs reports:

DCAL Lakes within the Foyle catchment are now closed for this season with exception of Binevenagh Lake; it will remain open unto the 31st December.

Temperatures dropped drastically at Cashel Trout Fishery

With winter fast approaching anglers are keen to test their skills against the artic conditions at Cashel.  Temperatures dropped drastically over the weekend leaving anglers limited time to make their catches.  Using assorted gold head lures Paddy Guyler (Limavady) managed to bank three trout while Andrew Nesbitt (Limavady) bagged three lovely trout for home which weighed 6lb 2ozs.  Keith Boyd accompanied by his 12 year old son Caolan released one trout which took a white fritz.

Well done to all!

Pike Angling Update

Shannon Region

Brian McManus reports:

Some pike from Ennell despite the cold

Photo: Stephen Gibbons and Martin Byrne got to grips with Lough Ennell's pike

I was on Ennell last week with Stephen Gibbons and Mark Byrne, and we boated two fine fish in very cold conditions. The lads are keen river pike anglers but now are hooked on Ennell. I am sure these lads will produce some huge pike from Midland waters this winter. We boated the best pike just out from Rinn Point and when I hooked up with some weeds beds they were covered with Zebra Mussel.

Derravaragh pike competition

Photo: This 14lb pike won Michael Flanagan the Owens Cup and also wins him Catch of the Week.

I have teamed up with Anglers World of Navan and using some of their new lures on Derravaragh I boated the winning pike which rattled the scales at over 14lbs. My angling partner on the day Ollie Dooner was on net duty and scooped in our winning pike. It’s certainly going to be hard to let go of these lures, but some lucky reader will get them before Christmas. Barry Darby finished 2nd on Derravaragh, with Killucan angler Christy Hynes 3rd. Damian Grifferty won the polls prize for best pike during the competition season and this fish weighed 20lbs 14oz. This Friday Derravaragh Anglers hold their A.G.M. and if you are interested in getting involved with one of Irelands top angling clubs drop into Murtagh Lounge Friday evening. Presentation of the Johnny Owens Cup took place in Weirs Lounge and award winning restaurant. A big thanks to Pat Weir  and staff for piping Hot soup and fantastic refreshments.
