Salmon angling Update

Eastern Region

David Byrne reports:

[26/08/10]

River Fane

The expected run of salmon has not yet materialized on the River Fane despite the big tides over the last couple of days. Some fresh fish have been seen on the lower stretches but the conditions favouring the brown trout fishing are not helping the salmon anglers. Only a handful of salmon were taken with the latest fish being a small grilse which was taken on Tuesday 24th August.

Sea trout fishing has improved in recent days with the arrival of the first of the harvest run. These fish are small with many being around the half pound mark. The water is in good condition for sea trout fishing.

Permits for salmon fishing on the Fane are available from the Dundalk Salmon Anglers, through Island Fishing Tackle, 58 Park St, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Castletown River

Sea trout fishing has improved this week on the Castletown River in Dundalk with local anglers reporting that the harvest run of sea trout has arrived. Many of these sea trout are small and fall into the half pound category. However, occasional sea trout around 1lb are still being taken in some areas.

Details of day permits, memberships and events are available from the Dundalk Brown Trout Angling Club at www.browntroutanglers.com

River Boyne and Tributaries

Water levels have dropped and cleared on the River Boyne this week. Salmon fishing improved with circa twenty to twenty five salmon being reported caught and released from Oldbridge to Navan. Grilse are averaging 6 to 7lbs but some bigger fish have been reported. Sea trout fishing has slowed on the Boyne around Oldbridge.

Fort William Fishery

20/08/10 Water levels are still the same with no rise after all the rain. The ground is just soaking it up so we will have to wait again to see what the forecast will bring. Saying that there is still plenty of fish about and still fresh fish moving in on a daily basis. 75 fish for the month of August so far so its looking to be yet another bumper month for us. No fish to report yesterday as no one was fishing but on Wednesday 3 fish were taken 2 by Stuart Feeney from Wexford one on fly and another on spinner off the Glenmore beat. Bob Woodside had 1 fish on fly off the Castle beat of 5lbs.

Lough Inagh

salmon
Photo:
Colin Conroy (Galway) caught a 4lb salmon on a Watsons Bumble

24/08/10 Water levels remained low for the last week.  I am pleased to report that at last we have a full flood now (Monday 23rd), and it should fish well for the coming days.  Last week was a fairly ok week for Inagh, but very strong winds (force 6 - 8 gusts at times) prevented anglers from having a relaxed time on the water.

There are still fresh salmon and sea trout entering the system and most of the salmon are 8 - 12lbs and even bigger!  5 salmon and 29 sea trout were recorded for the week.  Size 12 and 14 flies are the only flies taking fish!!!  All 5 salmon were caught on the lake and the lucky anglers were:

Andy Walsh and Padraic Fahy from Galway had a very good day on Inagh for sea trout.  They recorded 14 fish to 1.5lbs using Green Peter, Bibio and Daddy.

STEADY GRILSE CATCHES at Delphi

21/08/10 Another pretty good week, with a couple of stale springers and 26 grilse taken, 38% of which were sea-liced. So the run continues. And we continue to believe the number of grilse in the system is at least in line with the average of recent years and much better than 2009.

No prizes for guessing the top rod – Urs Leibundgut had another eight salmon in the week. Mark Corps had five, as did Paul Wymes. David Walmsley had three and Mike Shortt had two.

The best fish was Mark Corps’ 11-pounder from the Turn Pool, which also delivered an 8-pounder for Mike Shortt. Both were taken “nymphing” with weighted flies.

Some better bags of sea trout were landed this week, with some fish over 2lbs, but the sea trout fishing has yet to really take off.

[25/08/10]

River Moy

Angling effort on the River Moy continued to drop as the season wanes towards a close on September 30th, despite this the system has reported 307 salmon for the week. IFI would like to remind all anglers that the River Deel will be closed for angling from the 1st September, and a daily bag limit of one salmon or one sea trout over 40cm will be in operation on all waters from the 1st September.

The Moy Fishery continued to fish well over the week. The Ash Tree Pool produced good numbers, with 16 reported in total. Trevor Greene, N.Ireland had two on the fly from the Ash Tree Pool, with Gordon Sheedy, Limerick and John Delaney landing two salmon also. Several fish were taken on the Spring Wells, including one of 6.5lbs for George Dawson, N.Ireland and two for Peter Johnston, England, all taken on the fly.

The Cathedral Beat produced 17 salmon, including three for Rob Porter, Cork, and two for James Adamson, N.Ireland. The Ridge continued to fish well, accounting for 30 salmon, where Trevor Greene again had success, taking two on the fly, with Michael Wymes, Dublin also accounting for two fish.

salmon
Photo: Debbie Bowie and Ghillie Michael Wilson, with one of nine salmon Debbie caught during her week at Mount Falcon.

The Ballina Anglers’ water produced good fishing, as did Mount Falcon, where Bill Whitwell and party of seven anglers form the UK accounted for 50 salmon for a week’s angling, including one of 10lbs for Lady angler Debbie Bowie, which was just one of an impressive week’s total of 9 salmon for Debbie. Knockmore, Attymass and Coolcronan remained consistent in their catches, with Tommy Henderson, N.Ireland taking two on the worm at Coolcronan.

Byrnes reported several salmon, while Armstrong’s and Gannon’s had a relatively good week also. The Foxford Fishery produced good numbers, where Patrick Stiegher, France caught three to the spinner on his first day salmon fishing. Rinanney and the Foxford Town fisheries fished well. East Mayo Anglers also reported a good week, with Cecil Allen banking two with the fly.

Moy Estuary

The Moy Estuary Sea Trout and Boat Club held an angling competition on Saturday 21st with 28 anglers taking part, including three ladies and three juveniles. Angling was tough, with no large sea trout being taken. However good sport was had by all. The heaviest fish competition was won by Anthony McHale, with a trout of 1.58lbs, second was Dessie Padden and third Mark Campbell. The heaviest bag was won by Mark Campbell with six fish for 3.3lbs and second was John Fitzpatrick with five trout for 2.75lbs. The ladies winner was Marion Fitzpatrick and winning the junior section was Cian Dolan, second Anthony McHale and third Daniel Devine.

Ballisodare Fishery

Over the week 30 salmon were caught at Ballisodare, with over half of these being released back into the system. Club angler Josie Trotter caught one salmon on a green Cascade fly. Visiting angler Paul Mc Glory also successfully caught and released two fresh salmon during his day’s fishing at Ballisodare.

Drumcliff, Glencar and Bonet Systems

The Drumcliff River produced some great fishing over the week, with some anglers lucky enough to land up to three salmon per day. Early in the week, Michael Whimsey caught one of 7lbs at Hudson’s Bridge, Padraig McKenna also caught one of 6.5lbs at ‘The Lurgan’. Later in the week, Tony Donnelly caught one at 7lbs at the Lurgan while over the weekend Brian McNeill had great success catching three between 4lbs and 5lbs downstream of Hudson’s Bridge. Victoria Kernaghan, Manorhamilton, also had great success catching one of 5lbs.

On Glencar Lough, journalist Chris McCully, UK, and Gardiner Mitchell, N.Ireland, had good success for a day’s angling. They boated three sea trout, the best two weighing close to 2lbs, rose over ten more and broke on a good sized fish. They also had 15 brown trout to the boat for the day.

On the Bonet River, Kevin McDonnell, Cavan, had great success landing a salmon of 9lbs at McGoraty’s, and a further one of 11lbs at Cloonaquinn on the Manorhamilton waters.

Owenmore River

salmon
Photo: Diarmuid Maguire with his impressive catch of 13.5lbs from the Owenmore River.

Water levels on the Owenmore remained consistently suitable for angling for the past several weeks. The past week saw the best angling so far with large numbers of salmon caught, many of which were into double figures. Amongst the successful anglers was Diarmuid Maguire, who successfully landed a great fish of 13.5lbs.The fish was caught on an Ally’s Shrimp tube-fly.

Burrishoole Fishery

The Burrishoole Fishery reported a good run of salmon over the week, with one party boating a total of five salmon. Sean O’Malley, Westport caught and released one salmon of over 4lbs, while Martin McCoy, Derry had one of over 3lbs, with Neil Berwick, Dublin boating a grilse also. Sean and Michael Smith, UK, had five grilse between them, releasing two.

River Drowes

Water levels were fair on the Drowes over the week and rain in the middle of the week helped to keep this so. There were also fair numbers of rods fishing over the week and grilse were caught throughout the week. Numbers of grilse caught however, were not indicative of the large numbers of salmon now present in the fishery. The fish do tend to be somewhat dour at this time of year.

On Monday, Tony Brian recorded a 3½lb grilse caught from the Crooked Hole on a Curry’s Red shrimp fly. On Tuesday, Peter Butler accounted for a 3lb grilse caught from the Sea Pools on a Black Behan fly. Bernard McCullough registered a 4lb grilse caught from the Eel Weir on a Golden Shrimp fly. On Thursday, Bernard recorded 2 further grilse weighing 2 & 3lb caught from the New Bridge on a spinner. On Friday, Niall McIntyre accounted for a 2½lb grilse caught from the Black Gutter on a spinner. On Saturday, Tony Parker registered 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught from the Black Hole on flies. On Sunday, Andy Ward accounted for 2 grilse weighing 2 & 3lb caught from the Black Hole on flies. Marty King recorded 2 grilse caught weighing 4 & 5lb (released). The fish were caught from the Money Hole on shrimp. Ivor Doherty registered a 5lb grilse caught from the Sea Pools on a fly.

The forecast for the coming week is for unsettled showery weather. Allied to the decent tides, prospects for the coming week remain good.

Owenea Fishery

The River was running at low levels on Monday (0.09 metres) but heavy overnight rain meant that on Tuesday, we had a good flood reading 0.39m on the gauge. The following day there were still good water levels (0.27m) but thereafter, water levels fell away and by Sunday the gauge was only reading 0.12 metres. The gauge average for the week read 0.20 metres. The fishery was fairly busy with 61 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were fair numbers of salmon caught with most of the fish recorded during the floods on Tuesday & Wednesday. Given below are the catches to date taken from the catch register.

On Tuesday, Gerry Irwin recorded 3 grilse caught from beat 9 on a spinner. The fish weighed 5, 5 & 7lb. John Kerr registered 2 grilse weighing 4lb each caught from beat 8 on a spinner. Neil Gallagher logged a 5¾lb grilse caught from beat 9 on a spinner. Mick McCole recorded a fine 18lb salmon caught from beat 7 on a spinner. On Wednesday, James Forster accounted for 2 grilse caught from beat 7 on flies. The fish weighed 3 & 5lb with the smaller fish being released again. Angling partner George Friel also a caught 2 grilse weighing 3 & 5½lb from the same beat on flies with the smaller of these fish being released. On Thursday, Gerry Irwin recorded a further grilse caught. The fish weighed 4lb and was caught from beat 7 on a spinner.

The forecast for the coming week is for unsettled weather which should bring rain and I would expect some nice water levels. Prospects look good.

For info/bookings etc on the Owenea Fishery – Tel: 074 9551141. (9am to 1pm April to May & 7am to 1pm June to Sept).

ESKE FISHERY

The Lough continues to fish well for those venturing out. The sea trout fishing remains good when conditions are right and the Lough now has a good head of salmon present. There were good floods over the start of the week and these raised the level of the Lough Eske significantly which will have encouraged the salmon to run into the Lough as well as any late sea trout. There were a number of salmon caught and released on the river. Visiting French angler Pierre Rumeau recorded 3 salmon caught and released on flies for two days fishing on the river. The fish weighed 2½ , 6½ & 9lb.
There were a number of rods fishing over the week and those that I spoke to enjoyed there fishing. On Tuesday, Arthur Greenwood and Mark McDonald enjoyed a good days sport with 5 sea trout caught to 2½lb on wet flies from the Ridge area. Arthur also lost a good sea trout estimated at between 4 & 5lb which threw the hook during its seventh jump! I was fishing on Friday (a very rough day with strong winds) and caught and released a 4lb grilse on wet flies and my boat partner lost another of some 7 or 8lb. Pierre Rumeau caught and released 2 salmon weighing 5 & 9lb on wet fly.  Everybody, as usual, caught a number of brown trout though most were on the small side.

TROUT ANGLING

Trout Angling Update

Eastern Region

David Byrne reports:

[26/08/10]

River Fane

Water levels have been good for brown trout fishing in the Fane this week but the fishing continued to be difficult. Cool winds have not helped matters and fly hatches have slowed further. Eamonn Conway fished the Fane on Sunday 22nd August and caught and released around a dozen trout between 8 and 12 inches. All fish came to a size 16 klinkhammer. Justin Bird from Dundalk also enjoyed some nice fishing over the last week and caught and released plenty of trout during his visit to the Fane. Many of the fish were in the 8 to 12 inch bracket.

River Dee and Glyde

There has not been much brown trout angling activity on the Dee and Glyde this week and there has been weed growth is well established on many areas of the river. The best fishing on the Dee is still upstream of Ardee.

River Boyne and Tributaries

Navan

Water levels have dropped in the River Boyne but there is still a tinge of colour in the water. Colm Lynch from East Coast Angling reports that brown trout fishing has been difficult on the River Boyne at Navan this week.  This has been due to the cold easterly breeze. According to Colm not many trout anglers have been venturing out. Hatches have been very sparse on the Boyne and Blackwater. However, some sedges, gnats and the occasional olive have been observed on the water. The best trout reported during the last week weighed 1lb and was taken on fly by Adrian Sheridan upstream of Navan on the Blackwater. Improved weather conditions next week should produce better fishing.

Additional information and permits for the Navan waters can be obtained from Colm Lynch, East Coast Angling, Balmoral Industrial Estate, Kells Road Navan, Co. Meath. Tel: 046 9073377   mobile: 087 2044996  email: eastcoastangling@gmail.com

Trim

Marc O'Regan reports that the best of the trout fishing is now during the day. There is good activity at Trim but the evening rise is effectively over now by 8pm. The water is low and clear and fly hatches are sporadic. There is a lot of reed smut on the river during the day and some blue winged olives in the afternoon but evening sedge fishing is poor. The best of the fishing is to be had during the day. The club ran the Fagan Cup competition on the 15th August and 25 anglers fished in summer water levels but in an autumn temperature and cool north wind. Fly hatches consisted of a variety of sedges and reed smut with sporadic hatches of olives. Anglers reported catching fish but that they were coming in short feeding spells through out the evening. The results of the competition were as follows

1st Place Robert Smyth 1lb 13 3/4oz
2nd Place Oliver Smyth 13 1/4oz

Kells Blackwater

Pat McLoughlin reports that water levels in the Kells Blackwater are low and clear and conditions for fishing are very good at the moment. Pat fished on Monday 23rd August and had a lot of fish ten to fourteen inches and one lovely trout of 15inches.
According to Pat the falls of black gnat and smuts are nearly finished. Peter Martin had a nice 2.75lb trout on Sunday 22nd August on a black gnat. Pat also reports that there have been a number of salmon observed moving on a number of areas of the river.

Additional information about the Kells Angling Club can be found at www.kells-anglers.com

Angling guide Pat McLoughlin can be contacted at patandtrina@eircom.net or by mobile on 086 1017415

River Liffey

The water is low and clear on the Liffey at the moment. John Higgins reports great trout fishing on the River Liffey again this week. John fished with his fishing buddy Nicky Moore on Sunday 22nd August. John’s best fish of the day was a magnificent 19 inch wild brown trout which he estimates weighed between three and a half and four pounds. Nicky had a number of fish weighing between 1.5 and 2.5lbs.
Jose Luis from Parma de Majorca in Spain fished with John during the week and caught and released lots of small trout in the half pound bracket. Bigger fish await Jose on his next trip.

If you fancy spending a day on the River Liffey around Newbridge with angling guide John Higgins, he can be contacted at jjhiggins@o2.ie

Emy Lough Co. Monaghan

Emy Lough has produced some very nice trout in the last week. The best fish were taken during the Emy and District Anglers Competition which was held on Sunday 22nd August. The winner of the competition was Brian Corrigan from Glaslough, with a fine trout weighing 4lbs 4ozs, second place went to Paudge Cassidy with a trout weighing 3lbs 3ozs, third place went to Tommy Mc Caffrey with a trout of 2lbs 9ozs, fourth place went to Dan Gormley with a trout of 2lb 4ozs and fifth place went to Martin McKenna with a trout of 1lb 12ozs. . The water is low and clear at the moment and best results are being obtained with intermediate and sinking lines. Additional\ information on Emy Lough is available at www.emyvale.net.

Ballyhitt Lakes, Wexford

James Petitt reports that the Ballyhitt Fishery has fished very well all week with the best of the fishing being in the morning time. Trout are not rising well at the moment and most anglers are taking fish on intermediate lines. James reports that anglers have been catching between five and ten trout in a two to three hour session. There is a lot of fly on the water at the moment.  No really big fish have been taken lately and the best fish taken recently weighed just over 3lb.

If you fancy trying for one of Ballyhitt Fisheries big fish give James a call at 087 6796900.

Lough Sheelin

There were not many anglers on  the lake during the week and numbers were significantly down on the normal weekend activity. This was  probably attributed to the All Ireland Fleadh which was held in Cavan town between August 16th – August 22nd.

Not as many fish were seen at the weekend and trout seem to be feeding around the shallows of the lake. 55 trout in total were recorded, most were released.

Some of the returns were as follows:

Peter McArdle and Ken Cairns, Dundalk – Friday August 20th - 5 trout, 1-1½ lbs wet fly fishing. Saturday August 21st - 2 trout dapping using the Grass Hopper, heaviest fish was 2lbs. All fish were released.

Michael Kelly, Dublin – Wednesday August 18th, 6 trout best was 3 lbs, all caught dry fly fishing using a small sedge. All fish were released.

Lough O'Flynn

The weather has changed and is getting very cool in the evenings. On the warmer evenings good hatches of olives were observed by anglers. Four to five anglers are fishing the lough most days with mixed results. Jim Mc Donnell from Ballaghaderrean had 2 trout for one evenings fishing, best 1.75lbs.

ENNELL PERPETUAL CUP: On Sunday next L.E.T.P.A. will host the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup trout fly fishing competition. This is one of the clubs top trout competitions, and long time Ennell Angler Con Hope presented the Cup to L.E.T.P.A. Over the years some super trout were produced during this event and hopefully next Sunday will produce some good fish. A lot depends on the weather conditions and if fish are on the move.

In recent weeks some good trout have being caught late into the evening on the fly, and daytime anglers are picking up some trout on the troll. Local angler Tosh Grimes of Ginnell Terraced is having a fantastic season on Ennell, and produced a number of good fish last Sunday on the troll. Earlier in the week Tony English and John Dooner boated 4 fish on the fly on an evening session.

The competition will start and finish at Whitebridge Bay. It’s an 11am start and new members are welcome to join L.E.T.P.A. on the morning of the competition.

Michael Monaghan, Knockmore, won the competition with a trout of 1.9lbs, runner up was Padraig Traynor with a trout of 1.7lbs and third was Dominic McGowen with a trout of 1.5lbs.

Lough na Liebe

Lough na Liebe hosted the 6th leg of its angling competition on Sunday 22nd August, with weather conditions very suitable for angling. 36 rainbow trout were caught during the competition, with Martin Lawrence winning the day with 15 fish. Alan Spencer totaled 10, with Tommy Lynch and Bernard McDermott landing five apiece. 70 rainbow trout were caught on the lake for the week, with 62 of these being released. Daddies, the Kingsmill, Shipman’s and Shuttlecock buzzers proved successful flies.

Ballin Lough

Seven anglers in total fished Ballin Lough for the week, catching a total of seven trout, five of which were released. Pat Murphy and boat partner, Castlebar had four rainbow trout, releasing two, with their best weighing 2.5lbs. Philip McGing, Westport caught and released three in total.

Lough Melvin

The trout angling was fairly good over the week depending on who you spoke to. Some rods reported good catches of decent sonaghan on wet fly from the deeps off Garrison and Rossinver while others said they contacted only small trout. It seems you had to be in the right place at the right time. I have little in the way of reports on other trout since few anglers seem to fish the shallower water at this stage of the season.

Lough Eske

The Lough continues to fish well for those venturing out. The sea trout fishing remains good when conditions are right and the Lough now has a good head of salmon present. There were good floods over the start of the week and these raised the level of the Lough Eske significantly which will have encouraged the salmon to run into the Lough as well as any late sea trout. Everybody, as usual, caught a number of brown trout though most were on the small side.

Cashel Trout Fishery

Anglers are having a great time using dries at Cashel this week.  Local anglers Dominic Magee accompanied by sons Ryan and Justin had a fun time with us tempting trout on dries.  Dominic day out was a gift from his family for his birthday/wedding anniversary.  Lisburn’s Brian Colligan bagged one at 2lb 7ozs which took a small black midge while Italian Flavio Bruni spent a few hours of his holiday with us bagging two trout weighing 4lb 3ozs which took a small green fritz.  Derry’s Billy Haslett bagged four weighing 10lb 12ozs and continued to release twenty-one more trout back into the lake.  Billy used small dries to make his catches.  Brothers, Jim and Paul Ford (Derry) accompanied by Paul’s son, Adrian spent a couple of hours with a total of six trout released between the brothers.  They were using daddies.  Maghera’s Bernard Mellon released thirteen trout which took the f-fly while Limavady brothers, Paul and Nigel Rathfield, released two and four trout respectively using grey dusters and other small dries.  Seamus Bradley (Swatragh) bagged two weighing 5lb in total but unfortunately had to go home early.  He also was using daddy long legs.  Andrew Hickey (Kilrea) released five nice trout which took buzzers and a few lures.
Well done to all!

There has been some great coarse fishing in the area this week on pre-baited swims using mainly feeder tactics, Bream to 5lb, Hybrids to 2lb 9oz, Roach 1lb plus. Some big Rudd and Perch have featured in most catches falling for various bait combinations on the hook. At the time of writing the weather seems a little unsettled. Logon next week to read more reports and see more pictures of how the other groups at Melview are doing.

Angling guests of Melview Lodge Alan Moss and son Callum from Wicklow visited the upper Shannon for a fishing trip, joining them for the holiday was Alan's brother Bob from south London. They put together some great weights along with some quality fish, Hybrids to 2lb 9oz, Roach 1lb+ and some good Rudd and Perch. Pre-baiting paid off for them. They produced some fine catches of Bream to 5lbs. Young Callum showed that age did not matter putting together some fine weights during the week. Kevin commented that all three lads caught well all week despite putting up with high winds and heavy rain at times. All fish were released back to the water unharmed.

Carrick on Shannon Festival

Carrick on Shannon Festival
Photo: The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival celebrates its 30th birthday in September and the four-day event is attracting a new batch of overseas match fishermen who hope to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize.

But money isn’t everything.  The appeal for the new anglers seems to be the fact there is no pressure to pay anything more than the €80 entry fee and the majority of anglers don’t even bother with the optional sweepstake.
And on top of that, local fishing tackle dealer Terry Mann of Shannon Tackle Jamestown, throws €500 into the prize fund for the biggest fish caught on the last day!

“It works well”, explained the Terry, who moved from London 23 years ago to live and work on the banks of the River Shannon.  “The main festival is decided on points and introducing a decent-size last day prize keeps everyone focused on the Friday match”

Not only that, but there are valuable daily tackle prizes for the biggest fish and reduced bait prices to encourage more people to take part.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24 and the person to contact for more information is Charlotte Fearon on 00353 71 9620313.

It has to be said that there is a guaranteed €5,000 prize fund and across its 30 year history, more money has been paid out than ever is received in entry fees.

While the day was very hot and the winds were calm there was a great turnout with twenty two boats taking part even though it was not really ideal conditions and this meant that the Captains were not exactly rushed off their feet weighing fish and those they did weigh were relatively small with one exception as the pike caught by Mark Furey and Stephen Conway was the only one to make it into double figures.

tope
Photo: Charter Boat Skipper Pat Rankin Displays his 50lb Dundalk bay Tope

Twelve anglers fished the Boyne Estuary on Wednesday evening 25th August. The cold easterly/north-easterly wind stirred up the sand which did not help the fishing. Bass have been reported taken on the estuary over the last week but fishing has been difficult on the neap tides.

Rod Coan reports  that the Dundalk and District Sea Anglers held the Pat Wehrly Memorial Cup competition on Sunday 22nd August. The competition was for the heaviest bag of Tope. 5 boats took part in the competition with a total of 15 anglers. The Tope fishing was slow with a few missed runs on most boats, the first Tope of the day went to Brian Gallagher who claimed second place with a 23lbs fish. First place went to Pat Rankin with a good 50lb fish. These were the only tope caught during the competition but there were a couple of tope caught later in the day after the competition finished.

In addition to the tope, one boat landed over 30 coalfish, a number of pollack and some codling the biggest being 2 lbs. This great catch was taken by young anglers Zak Coan from Dundalk who caught them all. Another boat also had a 3lbs ling and a very nice 14lb Bullhuss. Mackerel were plentiful.

If you fancy having a go for one of these great fish in Dundalk Bay please contact Charter Skipper Pat Rankin at Casteltown Mount, Dundalk, Co. Louth. Tel: +353 42 9339695 or +353 87 9427146. Pat operates his boat the James Owen out of Bellurgan in Dundalk and specializes in reef, tope and general inshore fishing.

Dublin to Wexford

Bass fishing has been slower in the Wexford area because of the neap tides. Mullet fishing is good on most inlets piers and estuaries. Mackerel have arrived in better numbers in most areas.

Lots of specimens from Cork Harbour this week

Catch of a lifetime for Jon

bass
Photo: Jon Jacob Jingle Heimer Smith with his first bass ever.

Last wednesday bass fishing guide, Richie Ryan brought three American anglers out for a short trip on Cork Harbour. Despite neap tides and a tight schedule (they had to be finished by midday) the group found some very enjoyable fishing with cod, whiting, marckerel laned. Right at the end of the morning they managed to get a lovely 3lb bass. The lucky angler was Jon Troccoli. Jon finished the week by marrying Cobh girl Aoife O'Connor. Now that is the catch of a lifetime - congratulations Jon!

Over the weekend bass angling guru Jim Hendrick and French angler Jean Louis Max were fishing with Richie. Once again Richie was able to deliver the goods and bass were found for their sport.

If you would like to book a day out with Richie why not contact him here http://www.corkbass.com/

3 specimens for Martyn and Seirt

dogfish, plaice and dab
Photo: The specimen tally was a dab at 1.55lbs, a plaice at 4.15lbs, and a dogifsh at 3.75lbs.

Last week Martyn and fishing buddy, Seirt, managed three specimens in one day fishing aboard Martyn's boat, Screemin' Reels. Martyn takes up the story himself 'The day started as a hunt for ray and huss, but rather turned out a flatty marathon. It was a cracking days fishing to say the least. We initially headed out to new ground near the Smiths and I soon had the first specimen onboard; a lesser spotted dogfish. We shifted to an inshore mark, where we decided to drift. Here we picked up plenty of grey gurnard, but still no ray. We then moved to an area east of Trabolgan and again started to try for thornies. Still no joy but I picked up a nice plaice. This was soon followed by the second specimen of the day, a nice dab. We started to pick up some more nice plaice around the 2-3lb mark, and decided to continue fishing for flats. Seirt sent down his match bait special, and just as I said it was time to move, he said, "hang on whilst I just bring in this specimen plaice." Although, intended as a pun, he wasn't joking either! When I looked around, his 30lb class rod was bent over, and I could see long powerful runs. I grabbed the net and in went a lovely big plaice. Weighed onshore it tipped the scales at 4.15lbs. These days come very rarely and boy did we enjoy it.'

The specimen tally was a specimen dab at 1.55lbs, a specimen plaice at 4.15lbs, and a specimen LSD at 3.75lbs. What a great result! It looks like the lads on Screemin' Reels will be once more the ones to watch in the Cork Small Boats Festival http://www.skuaangling.net/

Conger to 40lb on John Boy

Donie Geary, skippering the John Boy, had Cobh SAC out with him this Sunday. Fishing at anchor at wreck mark the first fish was landed inside 20 minutes the first a conger of 20lbs. They had steady fishing for the next three hours, finishing up with over 30 conger, one of which was touching the 40lb mark, a near specimen! However, with only one ling and no pollack for their efforts Donie suspects that the wreck was heavily netted recently. Donie also reports that he had great fishing during the week. Nearly every day his party had over a box of cod to 8lbs drifting inshore reefs quite close to Roches Point. If you'd fancy a trip out on the John Boy check out Donie's website at http://www.sea-fishing-ireland.com/.

Blue Shark numbers are probably same as last couple years – average 1 to 3 runs per day – but no return yet to the great years of 2007 & 2008. There are a few Porbeagle Shark scattered around – our hot spot has not recovered since the start of July.

Reef Polllack fishing is better than in 2009 but still not as they should be. Fishing at the Limeburner is just Ok. As usual fishing over sand has its good and bad days. Good news for tope anglers, there seem to lots around.

Skate see Double Dutch in Red Bay

skate

Last week saw tremendous fishing with some of my dutch clients recording 14 specimens in the week. 4 different species made up this haul and they also got a lot of big big skate, congers, tope, spurs, huss, bmd, pollack, cod, haddock whiting and wrasse. Fishing is very good at this time but the weather is stopping us getting out the deep water.
