The scenic villages of Killaloe and Ballina are divided by the River Shannon at the southern end of the mighty 32,000 acre Lough Derg. These villages are 25 kms from Limerick City and approximately 50 kms from Shannon Airport. Killaloe is a well established Pike and Coarse Angling Centre with all supporting services available to the visitor.

    WHERE TO FISH

Fisheries described in this guide cover the lower river Shannon.  There are many hidden waters, remote shores and island swims on the southern end of Lough Derg where exceptional bream fishing can be had for those more adventurous anglers. Beware these are open shores, are very rocky and should be avoided during adverse weather conditions in the interest of your own safety. TJ O’Brien –  TJ’s Angling centre arranges trips and offers support to anglers visiting this part of the region. Always check the weather forecast.

There are shore facilities and fishing stands at Twomilegate nearby for those who are not happy moving by boat and are suitable for disabled anglers. Killaloe is also a good base for those interested in fishing the EAST CLARE LAKES. Other neighbouring angling centres include O’BRIENSBRIDGE on the River Shannon and MOUNTSHANNON and SCARIFF on Lough Derg’s western shores

R Shannon & Lough Derg Killaloe

Killaloe is a prime base for the Pike angler interested in fishing Lough Derg and the lower River Shannon. Good Pike fishing is often reported upriver of Killaloe on Lough Derg and downriver on the River Shannon to the E.S.B. (Electricity Supply Board) Dam, where fish up to 20lbs plus are encountered. Trolling spoons and plugs, trolling dead bait or dead-baiting from a drifting boat are the best methods to employ – vary your tactics. During spring time concentrate around the shore margins. This is the venue for the very popular European Pike Angling Challenge held every year in September and the growing International Pike fly Competition.

If fishing the shores always check the weather forecast as Lough Derg is a very large body of water and can be a dangerous place in bad weather, also the shore line can be very rocky in places, so in the interest of your own safety and comfort come suitably prepared with levelling platform and other appropriate gear.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Access to remote shores is limited by boat with an odd exception where private land access is gained by special permission or arrangement. Support and advice is readily available at TJ’s Angling Centre Killaloe.

    Twomilegate Lough Derg

This is a popular coarse fishing venue with very good shore facilities for the Bream and Roach angler. It is located on the shores of Lough Derg adjacent to the ‘Activity Centre’ in Twomilegate and is about 5 kms from Killaloe village on the Scariff road. This is the only venue on the western shores of Lough Derg with stands on the lakeshore.

Avoid the venue if strong winds are forecast especially from the east and north east in the interest of your own safety and comfort.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: There is a car park adjacent the Activity Centre which provides easy access to 9 fishing stands in total. Most of these stands are doubles which can accommodation two to three anglers per stand.

TO GET THERE: From Killaloe take the Scariff road for about 5 kms. There is easy access from the amenity area to the stands.
