WHERE TO FISH

There are a number of productive fisheries within the vicinity of Boyle which hold good stocks of most coarse fish, including Bream, Roach, Tench. Some noted pike fishing lakes are also available. Lough Key in particular boasts a former Irish record Lake Pike of 39 lbs. 3ozs caught by Michael Egan on the 11th of April1993 and was only relatively recently beaten in 2002. Five other lakes are described including three hotspots on the Boyle River.  Other neighbouring angling centres describe a lot of other fisheries and angling hotspots of which Boyle can serve as a good base. CARRICK ON SHANNON and DRUMSHANBO are but a short distance away and have a myriad of coarse  fisheries.

Lough Key

Lough Key is a large lake with a very good stock of pike. The lake produced the Irish record on the 11th of April 1993 at 39 lbs. 3 ozs and frequently records specimen pike to 20+lbs.  The lake also holds a very good stock of  bream to 5lbs, roach and hybrids. The best areas for coarse fishing area Doon shore, Erris bay and the Knockvicar side of the lake.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Access can be difficult and the best results can be gained by using a boat to access one of the islands or the shore of the lake.

HOW TO GET THERE: Forest Park: From Boyle take  the N4 road east of Boyle for about 2 miles, turn left into the Forest Park following the sign posts.  Doon shore: Take the N4 west for about 2 miles and follow the sign posts, turning right onto Doon shore.

Lough Gara

Lough Gara Lower is one of three lakes, a large body of water which holds good stocks of all coarse fish.  This is a noted pike fishery where fish to 20lbs+ are regularly recorded.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: There are two access points to the lake, one on the northern shore and the other is on the southern shore. Both areas have car parking facilities, a slipway to launch a boat and fishing stands. Open shore fishing is possible. There is good access for pike fishing from these points.

TO GET THERE: From Boyle take the local road out of Boyle for about 6 to 7 miles in the direction of Monastadan village, the lake is adjacent to the public road - northern end and southern end.
