This week Catch of the Week goes to Inland Fisheries Ireland's Mark Corps. Mark was working with Trout and Salmon magazine on a article showcasing the salmon angling on the River Suir when he caught this fine 23.2 lb cock salmon. The fish took a size 10 Tara (a weighted nymph of his own tying). After a 20 minute battle the fish was safely brought to the net and weighed at 23.2 lb. The salmon was then carefully released to continue its jouney to the spawning streams. Mark was fishing the Kilsheelan Beat with local guide Philip Maher of FishHunt.

Albacore tuna
This week Catch of the Week goes to intrepid angler Mike Dennehy although pictured above is his friend Rob with his first ever Albacore. After spending weeks waiting for a window in the weather, last Friday 17th provided Mike Dennehy with suitable conditions. An early start was needed to steam 70 miles to the area of the continental shelf where the albacore are most frequent. Mike was fishing from his own boat with friends and between them they caught 5 albacore. The biggest of these weighed 25lb.

Ronald Trass wins Catch of the Week for his 2.35m shark estimated at 130lb. The shark fishing in Courtmacsherry over the past couple of weeks has been our main activity, with large numbers of blue shark landed on  the Lady Louise and Lady Patricia. Serveral fish over 2m were landed with the best a 2.35m blue shark for Ronald Trass from Zeeland. This was one of the heaviest blues landed this year at around 130lbs. We estimate weight using the information that was gathered when we used to land many specimen shark in Courtmacsherry, of course now we have a policy of tag and release.

Billy Wilson wins Catch of the Week for this 25lb 4oz ling. Billy was fishing on the charter boat Rosguill out of Downings. He was on his first ever fishing trip off the wreck of the Devonian about 13 miles off the coast of Donegal.

The big ling took a 3/0 hook on a Hokkai trace and was pulled up along with a 6lb coalie on the top hook and a second ling of 10lb that had taken a pirk on the bottom of the trace. Quite a haul! He was using a Penn 30lb class rod and reel and 50lb mono.

Catch of the Week goes to a first time fly fisherman from Glanmire who landed a 22lbs salmon. Laurence Fitzpatrick only took up fly fishing about 3 months ago. He was supposed to fish with some friends on Lough Currane on Saturday, but plans changed and he instead went to the Argideen to see if he could spot a few seatrout. He decided to fish, paid for his permit and went up past Inchy Bridge where he caught 2 seatrout to a 1lb. Then he caught this salmon on a Cascade Shrimp fished on a 8ft 6wt fly rod with 8lb line. It took him about 35 minutes to land the salmon.  After that the club members went to their hut to weigh the fish and measure the fish. The huge salmon weighed 22lb and measured over 35 inches long.
