Last Friday, 19 November proved to be a mild enough day with little or no wind at Rathcon Fishery. Mark Corps fished with colleagues from IFI as trout occasionally rose around him – mainly to chironomids. The fish were not reponding to his usual ‘Buzzers’ or ‘Shipman’s’ so he tried some small lures. Using a sink tip line and fishing in and around the edges he had a take on a small ‘Cats Whisker.’ It felt like a good fish but no one realised how good until it started to jump. During the fight it stayed tight to the bank causing problems with the two droppers snagging in weed. After some more acrobatics, snags and a walk of about 100m along the bank it was finally netted by fellow angler Phillip. This fish was not weighed but a conservative estimate puts it at about 10lb.

Catch of the Week goes to Darren Guy for this 43lb conger. The recent high pressure gave good conditions for working offshore. Fishing with Hamish Currie, of the Predator, Darren and his friends headed to large gully 17km north of Rathlin Island. Using a pollack for bait, Darren connected with this fine conger.

Gerard Bradley and Alex Nichlson produced a few huge pike on their most recent angling adventures. The lads did a night session on the mighty River Shannon and at 6-30 in the morning Gerard got a run on dead bait and produced a real beauty, well in the high double figures. Alex was also in action and had 4 good pike. Mind you Gerard really pushed out the boat on another trip and banked a huge pike weighing 24lbs 12oz. This fine pike took a popped up dead rudd, and was in mint condition.

Catch of the Week goes to Anthony Egan for this lovely 30lb 11oz pike. Anthony and Michael Flanagan were in Sligo last Sunday to compete in the Boyle Rambling Anglers open boat pike competition. Rooskey Angler Anthony Egan latched onto a whopper in the morning session and it rattled the scales at 30lbs 11oz. The pike took a float trolled joey mackerel dead bait and was weighed on shore with certified scales. After a quick photo the fish swam away strongly.
