Drumshanbo Angling Centre

Drumshanbo is located on the Upper Shannon at the southern tip of Lough Allen in the most northern part of the Shannon region. 

WHERE TO FISH

This guide covers several shore  venues around Lough Allen, each having popular local names such as Heron's Shore, Barney's Point etc. There are  also  a number of lakes immediately around Drumshanbo centre. Ballintra on the River Shannon is also described. Inland Fisheries Ireland provide angling facilities on some of these fisheries.

Lustia is a small shallow lake that can become weedy during the summer. The lake holds a good stock of small bream and roach.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: The lake is accessed via a old farm road way down to the lake. There are no stands.

TO GET THERE: Travel out the old hill road out of Drumshanbo for 3 miles and the lake is into the right.

Located 3 miles to the south of Drumshanbo this a 15 acre lake which has a good stock of Bream to 2lbs with Roach, Hybrids and perch. Fishing is into 6 to 10 feet of water and the lake produces all year.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: There are 10 single fishing stands and a floating stand for disabled acess along with a number of footbridges and stiles.

TO GET THERE: Travel south from Drumshanbo along the Carrick-on-Shannon road for 3 miles and you will see the lake and car park to your right.

Acres lake has good Bream, Roach and hybrids. The lake is shallow and can get weedy during the summer.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Inland Fisheries Ireland has one double fishing stand located to the left of the amenity area and a floating stand for disabled anglers. Access is across a stile along private land.

TO GET THERE: Travel out of Drumshanbo for 1/4 mile along the Carrick-on-Shannon road. The lake is to your right.

This lake holds a stock of small Bream and Roach. Fishing is into 7 feet of water and the lake responds well to pre-baiting.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Inland Fisheries Ireland has two double stands and two singles along the lake shore. Access to the lake is across a foot stile on the Drumshanbo side of the lake.

To get THERE: Travel out the Carrick-on-Shannon road from Drumshanbo for 3/4 mile and you will see a lay-by to your left after you have passed Acres lake. Pull in here and walk down the walk way to the lake.

Located along a local road this is a very small water which is shallow and weedy. The lake has a stock of Tench to 4lbs.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Access is a short walk across private land. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has provided one double stand with a access stiles. There is parking for 4 cars in te field beside the lake. The public road is narrow so care needs to be taken in this area.

TO GET THERE: Take the Drumkeeran road for 2 miles out of Drumshanbo. Take a left hand turn and travel for a mile. At the T junction turn left and travel a mile till you see the small lake into your left.

This small lake has a small stock of Bream to 2lbs Roach and Perch.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: The lake is close to the public road and fishing is from the shore.

TO GET THERE: Take the old Dowra road from Drumshanbo for 3 miles and the lake is into the right.

Lough Allen, Corlough ( Heron's Shore) is on the south eastern shore of the lake along the Dowra road. The area has a good stock of Bream to 4lbs with plenty of Roach, Hybrids, Rudd and Perch. Fishing is into 5 to 12 feet of water and the best area along the section is in front of the car park and pegs 5 to 7 to the left of the car park. This area will produce all year round with the best results during May and June.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Under the T.A.M programme the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board erected an access road way and car park and provides access stiles etc. This is a bank fishery which can cater for up to 25 anglers along an open shore.

TO GET THERE: The area is sign posted from Drumshanbo out the Dowra road.

Barney's Point L. Allen

Located on Lough Allen, this shore fishery is along the south western end of the lake. Fishing is into 6 to 20 feet of water and feeder fishing may be the best method. The area has a stock of Bream to 4lbs with a stock of Roach, Rudd, Perch and hybrids. There is also a stock of Pike in the area to 20lbs.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Under T.A.M Inland Fisheries Ireland constructed an access roadway and car park to this area. Shore clearance was undertaken which can cater for about 20 anglers.

TO GET THERE: The area is signed posted from Drumshanbo out the Drumkeeran road.

Located on Lough Allen, this is a small bay on the southern shore of the lake. Access is though private land and care should be taken to respect the lands you are crossing. In this bay you are fishing into 8 to 12 feet of water. The area produces good Bream to 5lb and best results will be found during May and early June. There is also a good stock of Roach, Hybrids , Rudd and Perch. Lough Allen also has a good stock of Pike to 20lbs+.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Open shore. The area will cater for 5 to 8 anglers and fishing is from the shore side.

TO GET THERE: From Drumshanbo take the Drumkeeran road for about 1mile and pull into the lay-by located on you right hand side. Access is though the old field gate.

Access to this area is the same as for Holly Island. This section of river gives good returns in the early part of the year, May and June being the best. Fishing is into 6 to 8 feet of water and access is along the left hand bank.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS: Access is along the left hand band along private land. There are only 3 or 4 good pegs in this area.

TO GET THERE: Follow the signs for Holly Island out of Drumshanbo. When you get to the entrance to Holly island park there is a  carpark and access the river is to your left.
