Where to fish?

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland a coarse fishing Licence is required and on most waters a permit is also needed. A coarse licence (covering pike fishing) is required by law for eveyone over 12 years of age fishing in Northern Ireland. It should be noted that a coarse rod licence and a coarse Department permit entitle the holder to use two coarse rods at a time. A separate coarse licence and coarse permit is required for a third and subsequent coarse rod being used. Similarly, holders of juvenile permits are entitled to fish using two coarse rods at a time.

Fisheries Profile

Enniskillen

Co. Fermanagh

Lough Erne, River Erne

The Erne is one of the finest coarse fishing waters in Europe and has become popular as a competition venue for visiting anglers. Fishing in the Upper lough is concentrated between Enniskillen and Newtonbutler with Broadmeadow, Dolans Ring, Cornagrade, Scotch Store and Schools stretches being popular. For the specialist angler tench can be found in the weedy areas in the summer. Roach are everywhere with bream, pike, perch and eels, in abundance. In recent years many outstanding weights have been recorded during sponsored coarse angling competitions. Modern pegs and fishing stands are available for up to 500 anglers. The Department’s scientists have carried out an extensive coarse fish survey which indicates that fish are plentiful throughout this vast water although the bulk of match fishing takes place around Enniskillen.
