First recorded Tinsel fish makes timely visit to Irish waters
A CONNEMARA vessel has trawled up a most seasonally named Tinsel fish – the first such recorded catch in Irish waters. The fish – so named because of its longitudinal scales and translucent flesh – was netted by Rossaveal trawler Maria Magdalena III, owned by two Aran islanders, on the Porcupine Bank.

Following the mayfly
A PACKED audience attended the recent launch of the DVD production Follow the Fly – A Mayfly Season in Ireland , in the Morgan Hotel, Temple Bar, Dublin. The film is produced by Gary Finnegan and features well known anglers Richie Johnston and Charlie Stuart as they visit a selection of the finest trout lakes in Ireland during the mayfly season.

Councillors look to appoint fisheries development officer
Following on from the success that Mayo County Council has had in promoting the county as a walking destination since the appointment of a full time walking officer, a number of councillors are requesting that the council look at a similar appointment to promote fishing in the county on a pilot basis.

Change in match rules could have big benefits for future events
THE recent meeting of CIPS, the organisation controlling international angling competitions, resulted in a change to match rules. World Championships and all international matches have always been fished over three hours; but now after years of lobbying by delegates from the four home countries teams the rules have been changed to make all matches four hour competitions.

EU talks on fish quota deal continue
THE ANNUAL negotiation on European fishing rights continued late last night in Brussels... ...The proposal from Ms Damanaki, the Greek commissioner, has met resistance in Irish fishing circles... ...“Past experience has shown that those who think they can negotiate with nature will not have a long future in fishing,” she said... ...She also said a moratorium on commercial seabass fishing should be retained.

Fishermen begin quota battle in Brussels
IRELAND’S small island and inland fishermen are siding with the European Commission and environmentalists against the Government and the big fishing interests at the annual battle for fish quota. They are being supported by the Irish Wildlife Trust and the worldwide fish conservation body, Ocean 2012 whose experts will be on the sidelines of negotiations.

Poaching menace
THE POACHING of deer, salmon and other wild species by selfish, greedy individuals has grown to epidemic proportions over the past two years as the recession worsened and personal incomes fell. Efforts by the Garda Síochána and Inland Fisheries Ireland to crack down on these illegal activities should address both ends of that supply chain.
